Knit Wits

The prayer shawl ministry was created in 1998 by two women after they completed the Women’s Leadership Institute at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut. When they graduated they were encouraged to carry on the spirit of the class through some kind of project. ……they felt called to knit shawls for new mothers and women with breast cancer. Soon shawls were being knit for many purposes, including important celebrations.

Using this information, Dorris Denny began the GUMC Prayer Shawl Ministry. She taught willing participants to knit or crochet. She even had Bob hooking shawls on a loom. For beginners, the process may be frustrating but in the finished shawl, the joy and rewards are immeasurable. The completed shawls are placed on a rack set on the altar to receive the prayers of the congregation. A note is attached to each shawl before it is delivered.

So, I know your next question is going to be, but I don’t know how to knit or crochet. You don’t have to know how to come join these lovely ladies. If you want to learn they will teach you. If you have a craft you like to do and want to do that instead bring it with you. Maybe you don’t want to do any knitting, crocheting or crafts. That’s ok too. Just come and share in a time of fellowship with the ladies of the Knit Wits, who knows you might change your mind and want to try. They meet every Wednesday morning at 10am .  If you have any questions please call Esther Han, Linda Sanders or Donna Roll.
